DJ IQ
Location:
London, UK
Biography:

Winner of the UK under-18’s DMC Champion DJ IQ at an early age, this young disc jockey has gone on to become Jehst’s live DJ. Aswell as having his cuts featured on some of the biggest UK artists’ material, he has taken the logical step into the world of production, with several albums under his belt, namely his debut album Brainfood, the follow up Live! From the Sofa and his collaborative project ‘The ALoop Theory’ with producer and MC Asaviour.
Although IQ may have just turned 20 he’s been in the game for a little while now and has built up a strong following and a neat discography for himself. From touring extensively all over the world with Jehst (as his official DJ), to supporting U.S names such as De La Soul, Guru & Non-Phixion, representing on the airwaves of London’s finest station Itch FM with his own show, and releasing his most recent and successful third instalment of ‘The Official’ mix tape series; this man has definitely kept himself busy! Collaborations have included cuts on tracks from the likes of Jehst, Asaviour, Foreign Beggars, Yungun aka Essa, Ghost, Kashmere & Verb.T. Winning the Under 18 DMC World Championship in 2002/2003 saw the emergence of IQ’s ability to cut up and remix music live in the clubs. Experimentation became the name of the game, with turntable DJ skills that have ‘wowed’ people up & down the country it was a natural next step to venture into the world of production. His beat making style is as unique as his DJ work. ‘How would he describe his sound?’ ‘Generally I just look for emotion, so I would say emotional and soulful with bits of funk & jazz. It’s kinda like my own brand of raw Hip Hop, some of it sounds quite old school and then there’s sum futuristic bugged out shit’ Currently working at his base ‘The Mothership’ equipped with his trusty MPC, dusty vinyl & special herbs he has been experimenting for quite some time now, the first ‘experiment’ to be released to the general public is Brain Food. Driven by music & sounds that carry feeling & emotion, this album is a collection of some of his best work so far. Over the years he has appeared on 1xtra, Kiss 100, Choice & Radio 1 gaining the support from the likes of DJ MK, Dan Greenpeace, DJ Blakey, Ras Kwame, Excalibah and a host of international DJs.
Aside from his own projects a number of IQ’s productions have also appeared on other releases. So far he has produced beats for the record labels Lowlife, Receptor and Suspect Packages. Rest assured there’s a lot more coming from this young man!

Review:
Possibly one of the most unique things about this album is the impressive array of artists IQ has collaborated with. From names you may have heard of to names you may have not, the point is: musically everything is just dope. Throughout the LP IQ covers a range of different moods, whether it be the funky baseline and pshycadelic-warped feel to ‘Medication’ Featuring Smurf (YNR); or the emotive, thought provoking ‘Elevate’ featuring Jehst (Lowlife/YNR); the space aged futuristic & jazzy ‘Top Notch’ Featuring Kaspa (ManCan); the slightly absurd yet irresistibly banging ‘Welcome 2The Circus’ Featuring Foreign Beggars (Dented/Casual); or even the moody, hypnotic & mysterious ‘Kaleidoscopes & Tightropes’ Featuring Asaviour (Lowlife). You can see IQ covers a lot here.
