The Fontanas
Location:
West London, UK
Biography:

Siblings without rivalry, The Fontanas are the musical brotherhood of producers Sam Sutton and Simon Ashbrook. This unlikely international production duo first met by chance in 2004 on the express train to Barcelona Airport, when Simon commented on Sam“s somewhat dated electric guitar (a Mustang). Two years and one album later, they have worked slavishly across the ether between London and Barcelona, creating a body of work that most artists would find hard to achieve in two lifetimes. Masters of fusion, their music is a case study in musical progression, with a catalogue of currently unreleased tracks ranging from downbeat back foot latin grooves and ambient trip hop to funk-fuelled house anthems that blow the doors off. With influences scattered across the globe, their music is a symbiotic process that finds its roots in the foothills of Brazil, Jamaica, North America and even the UK. Taking only the best from every nation, these two visionaries have given birth to a new, unified musical nation, and with it, a new direction in music production.

Introducing…The Fontanas
Review:
The album, ‘Introducing the Fontanas’ is a collaborative gesture, calling on a suitably dynamic selection of London’s finest singers and session musicians, hand picked by six degrees of separation. Artists featuring on the album include acclaimed turntablist Gizz Roc of Mixologists, winner of the 1999 European ITF Championships, runner up in 2000 DMC World Finals and winner of 2001 DMC UK Championships, whose outrageous scratch skills feature on ‘Ska’d For Life.’ Other high profile appearances include Andy Hughes, long time founder member of the Orb, responsible for such gems as Little Fluffy Clouds, and who has worked with artists from Robbie Williams and Roger Waters to Faithless. Andy has recently mixed the Basement Jaxx studio album and shares ‘Atlantic Jaxx’ studios in Brixton where ‘Ska’d for Life’ and ‘Skank’ were co-written and mixed. Also appearing on the album is vocalist and songwriter Heidi Levo from north west London, who has performed with Isaac Hayes and the Brand New Heavies, has recorded with artists such as I.G Culture, Carl Douglas and Liquid People, and has released tracks on Hed Kandi, Defected Records, Africanism and Eclectic Breaks, amongst many others. The list goes on, but the end result is the same, a super charged album of tracks that aims to please.
